MicroStrategy Desktop connect to Impala

Environment:

MicroStrategy Desktop 10.11

Cloudera CDH 5.12

Impala 2.x

Steps to connect MicroStrategy Destop to Cloudera Impala:

Best thing about MicroStrategy Desktop unlike Tableau Desktop is it is free to download and use and a powerful BI visualization/query tool. Tableau Public Desktop is free but it only has few connectors and cannot connect to Hadoop or JDBC sources for which you need to buy the full Tableau Desktop.

Step-1: Click New Dossier and Add New Data

Click on Impala data source and add a new ODBC DSN Data Source. Dont select DSN-less data source as it wont work.

Step-2: Refresh to open the ODBC datasource add dialog. Then add a new System DSN and Select MicroStrategy ODBC Driver for Impala Wire protocol connector.

Give a Data Source Name, Hostname of the Namenode and port 21050, database name: default . Test Connect and make sure it is successful. Click OK and go back to your Dossier and refresh the Namespace. You should see all your database and tables to select.

After that you can run any query using Impala.
